What a Finnish Police Station Study Teaches Us About Chronic Illness
Many patients who come to our clinic describe a similar story:
“I was never the same after living or working in that building.”
“Now I react to smells, chemicals, and even supplements.”
“Doctors tell me my tests are normal, but my brain doesn’t feel normal.”
Growing scientific evidence now supports what patients have long known: chronic exposure to mold and damp indoor environments can cause lasting neurological and chemical sensitivity symptoms.
A 2021 peer-reviewed study from Finland provides particularly important insight.
A Real-World Study: Mold Exposure in a Finnish Police Station
Researchers investigated employees working in a water-damaged police station in Finland with significant dampness and microbial contamination.
What the Researchers Found
High Rates of Neurological Symptoms:
Brain fog, memory issues, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and sensory disturbances persisted even after leaving the building.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS):
Very high rates of reactions to fragrances, cleaning products, exhaust, and chemicals.
Not Psychological:
Symptoms were consistent, exposure-related, and biologically plausible.
Functional Medicine Perspective:
Mold exposure may lead to neuroinflammation, limbic system sensitization, and blood–brain barrier disruption.
Why This Matters:
This research validates patient experiences and supports a whole-body, systems-based approach to healing.
