What to Expect as a New Patient

What to Expect as a New Patient with Neurodegenerative Disease

By Dr. Jamie Ahn, ND  |  GoodNews Naturopathic Clinic, Norwalk, CT  |  Board-Certified Naturopathic Physician & Functional Medicine Doctor

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, or another neurodegenerative condition, chances are you’ve already been through the conventional medicine route. You’ve seen the neurologist. You’ve gotten the MRI. You may have been handed a prescription and told to come back in three months.

And yet — something still feels unanswered. Why did this happen? Why now? Is there anything that can actually be done beyond managing symptoms?

Those are exactly the questions I ask too. As a board-certified naturopathic physician and functional medicine doctor in Connecticut, my job isn’t just to name the disease — it’s to understand why your body got there in the first place. That’s what root-cause medicine is all about, and it’s the foundation of everything we do at GoodNews Naturopathic Clinic in Norwalk, CT.

This post is for anyone who is new to our practice — or considering becoming a patient — and wants to understand what our process actually looks like. What tests do we run? Why do we run them? And how does our functional medicine approach to neurodegenerative disease differ from what you’ve experienced before?

The Root Causes of Neurodegenerative Disease We Investigate

Here’s something conventional medicine doesn’t always say out loud: most neurodegenerative diseases are not purely genetic fate. Yes, genetics can increase your risk. But genes are rarely the whole story. What decades of research confirm — and what I see every day in my patients — is that the brain is exquisitely sensitive to its environment.

Toxins accumulate silently. Gut infections go undetected for years. Hormone imbalances quietly disrupt neurological function. Nutrient deficiencies starve the nervous system of what it needs to repair itself. Neuroinflammation smolders in the background, invisible on a standard blood panel, slowly wearing down nerve tissue.

Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, and MS share a striking number of root causes: neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, toxic burden, and gut dysbiosis. These conditions branch out differently in terms of symptoms and affected neurons — but the underlying terrain that allowed them to take hold often overlaps considerably.

That’s actually good news. It means a comprehensive functional medicine workup can serve every neurodegenerative patient well — not just those with a single specific diagnosis. The question is whether anyone has looked for these drivers in you. That’s what we do.

What Your First Visits Look Like at Our Norwalk, CT Clinic

When you come to us as a new patient, the first thing we do is listen. Your first appointment is a full 90-minute intake — not a rushed 15-minute visit. We want to know your complete health history: your environment, your diet, your stress load, occupational exposures, medications, and what has and hasn’t worked. Neurodegenerative disease rarely has a single cause, and we won’t find it by cutting the conversation short.

After testing is complete, we schedule a second 90-minute appointment specifically to review your results together. This is where we connect the dots — walking through what the labs mean in the context of your life and diagnosis, explaining how the pieces relate to each other, and building a personalized treatment strategy around your specific picture, not a generic protocol.

Functional Medicine Testing: What We Evaluate and Why

Think of these tests as casting a wide net. Standard labs look for what’s acutely wrong. Functional medicine tests look for what’s slowly building — the underlying conditions that create a toxic, inflammatory, or nutritionally depleted environment in which the nervous system cannot survive long-term.

Heavy Metals and Environmental Toxin Testing

This is one of the most important — and most overlooked — areas in neurodegenerative disease testing. The brain is one of the most lipid-rich organs in the body, making it a prime target for fat-soluble toxins that accumulate over decades.

We test for heavy metals including mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, and aluminum — all well-documented neurotoxins with direct links to cognitive decline, motor neuron damage, and neuroinflammation. But we go well beyond metals. Using panels like the Vibrant Wellness Toxin Zoomer, we screen for a broad range of environmental toxins, including:

  • BPA and phthalates — found in plastics and personal care products; endocrine disruptors linked to increased Alzheimer’s risk
  • Glyphosate — the world’s most-used herbicide, found in conventionally grown grains and produce; disrupts gut bacteria and is associated with Parkinson’s disease
  • PFAS (‘forever chemicals’) — found in non-stick cookware, food packaging, and drinking water; accumulate in the brain and impair detox pathways
  • Mycotoxins — toxic mold compounds that are a profoundly underdiagnosed driver of brain fog, memory loss, and nerve dysfunction

The Toxin Zoomer also includes 25 genetic variants that influence detox enzyme function and methylation pathways — so we can see not just what toxins are present, but how well your body is equipped to clear them.

Advanced Hormone Panel

The brain is hormone-dependent. Estrogen, testosterone, thyroid hormones, cortisol, DHEA, and progesterone all play direct roles in neuroprotection, inflammation regulation, and nervous system repair. When these fall out of balance — which happens gradually and often silently — the brain loses critical support.

We use advanced hormone panels that reveal not just circulating levels, but how hormones are being metabolized and whether harmful metabolites are accumulating. In neurodegenerative patients, hormonal imbalances are far more common than most people realize — and when identified and corrected, many patients notice meaningful improvements in cognition, energy, and quality of life.

Gut Health: Microbiome, Infections, and the Gut–Brain Axis

The gut-brain connection in neurodegenerative disease is real and clinically critical. Research now links gut dysbiosis, intestinal permeability (leaky gut), and chronic gut infections to increased neuroinflammation and worsening of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The vagus nerve — running directly from the brainstem to the gut — is a primary highway between the two systems.

We use advanced stool testing to screen for pathogenic bacteria, parasites, Candida overgrowth, H. pylori, and markers of gut inflammation. We also run the Organic Acids Test (OAT), which reveals overgrowths of yeast and bacteria that may not appear on a standard stool culture, and provides a window into gut-derived neurotoxins that can cross into the bloodstream. Healing the gut is not optional in neurodegenerative disease — it’s foundational.

Nutritional Deficiency Assessment

Vitamins B12, D, and folate are essential for nerve function and neurological repair. Magnesium supports neurotransmitter balance and protects against excitotoxicity. Zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and CoQ10 are critical for mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress in the nervous system. When these are depleted — extremely common in patients on long-term medications — the brain loses its capacity to heal and adapt.

The OAT gives us a detailed view of mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter metabolism, and specific nutrient insufficiencies that a standard blood panel simply cannot reveal.

Detoxification and Methylation Pathways

Not everyone detoxifies at the same rate. Genetic variations — particularly in the MTHFR gene and related methylation pathways, as well as Phase I and Phase II detox enzymes — can significantly impair the body’s ability to clear toxins and regulate inflammation. When detox pathways are sluggish, toxins accumulate faster than the body can eliminate them.

The Toxin Zoomer pairs toxin burden with genetic detox capacity — understanding both what’s present and how efficiently your system can clear it is essential for building an effective, realistic protocol.

Food Sensitivity and Environmental Allergy Testing

Chronic, low-grade immune reactions to everyday foods or environmental allergens keep the immune system in a constant state of activation. Over time, this contributes to systemic neuroinflammation — a background fire that never quite goes out. Many patients are genuinely surprised to find that foods they’ve eaten their whole lives are quietly driving an immune response.

We use IgG and IgE food sensitivity panels to identify reactive foods. Removing these triggers can meaningfully reduce the inflammatory burden on the nervous system — often producing noticeable cognitive and energy improvements within weeks.

Conventional Lab Testing for Neurodegenerative Disease

Functional medicine does not replace conventional medicine — it extends it. We run a comprehensive conventional blood panel for virtually all our neurodegenerative patients, including:

  • Complete metabolic panel and CBC
  • Full thyroid function: free T3, free T4, reverse T3 — not just TSH
  • Fasting insulin and blood sugar regulation (insulin resistance is now recognized as a major driver of cognitive decline — sometimes called ‘Type 3 diabetes’ in the Alzheimer’s context)
  • Homocysteine — a sensitive methylation marker significantly elevated in many neurodegenerative patients
  • High-sensitivity CRP and inflammatory markers
  • Ferritin and iron studies
  • Lipid panel including oxidized LDL and ApoE genotype where relevant
  • Vitamin D levels, uric acid, and oxidative stress markers
  • Epstein-Barr virus reactivation (linked to MS and other neuroinflammatory conditions)

The conventional labs give us the clinical foundation. The functional tests give us the underlying drivers. Reviewed together in the second 90-minute visit, they give us the complete picture needed to build a treatment plan that addresses why this is happening — not just what to call it.

What Comes After Testing? Your Personalized Treatment Plan

Treatment plans are highly individualized and built entirely around your specific results. They typically include:

  • Targeted supplementation to correct nutrient deficiencies and support detox and methylation pathways
  • Dietary changes based on food sensitivity findings and metabolic needs
  • Gut healing protocols when infections or dysbiosis are present
  • Toxin removal strategies appropriate to your specific exposures and detox genetics
  • Hormone balancing where applicable
  • Ongoing coordination with your neurologist or specialist

We don’t promise miracles. What I can tell you — and what many of my patients will tell you themselves — is that finding and addressing root causes changes the trajectory. It can slow progression significantly. It can improve quality of life, cognitive clarity, energy, and independence. And it gives patients agency in a situation where they’ve often been told there’s nothing to be done.

You Deserve Answers — Not Just a Diagnosis

If you’re reading this because someone you love has just been diagnosed, or because you’re months or years into a diagnosis and feel like something is still being missed — that feeling is valid. There often is more to find. And finding it can matter enormously.

Our approach at GoodNews Naturopathic Clinic in Norwalk, CT is thorough, science-based, and patient-centered. We take the time — two full 90-minute appointments — because this kind of work requires it. We work alongside your existing medical team. We look deeper.

What is functional medicine for neurodegenerative disease?

Functional medicine for neurodegenerative disease is a comprehensive, root-cause approach that investigates why neurodegeneration is occurring — including toxin accumulation, gut dysbiosis, hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, and chronic inflammation — rather than simply managing symptoms. Dr. Jamie Ahn combines advanced functional medicine testing with conventional labs to build a personalized treatment plan for each patient.

Can a naturopathic doctor help with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease?

Yes. A board-certified naturopathic physician like Dr. Jamie Ahn works alongside your existing neurologist to investigate underlying drivers of conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. While naturopathic care does not cure neurodegenerative disease, identifying and addressing root causes — such as heavy metal burden, gut infections, and hormonal imbalances — can meaningfully slow progression and improve quality of life.

What tests does Dr. Jamie Ahn run for neurodegenerative disease patients?

Dr. Ahn runs a comprehensive battery of both functional medicine and conventional labs, including heavy metal and environmental toxin panels, the Organic Acids Test (OAT), advanced hormone panels, gut microbiome and stool testing, food sensitivity panels, thyroid function, homocysteine, fasting insulin, ApoE genotype, and markers of oxidative stress and inflammation.

How is functional medicine different from conventional neurology?

Conventional neurology excels at diagnosing and classifying neurodegenerative disease and managing acute symptoms. Functional medicine extends this by investigating the underlying terrain — the toxic, inflammatory, or nutritionally depleted environment — that allowed neurodegeneration to develop. Both approaches are valuable and work best when coordinated together.
