Organic Acids & Nutrient Testing
Fatigue, brain fog, low mood and slow recovery often have a metabolic side that standard blood work doesn’t show. These tests look at how your cells are actually working, so nutrition and supplements can be matched to what your body needs instead of guessed at.
Organic Acids Testing
Organic acids are byproducts of your metabolism, and a simple at-home urine test measures dozens of them. Together they give a picture of:
- Energy production (mitochondrial function)
- B-vitamin and other nutrient needs
- Neurotransmitter metabolism, related to mood and focus
- Oxidative stress and detox pathways
- Byproducts of yeast and certain gut bacteria
- Oxalates, which can matter for pain, kidney stones and inflammation
Nutrient, Fatty Acid and Methylation Testing
Blood-based testing can measure vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential fatty acids such as omega-3s. Methylation testing looks at a key set of reactions that support detox, mood, energy and cardiovascular health, and that depend on nutrients such as folate and B12.
Tests I Commonly Use
I choose each test from the specialty lab best suited to your situation, so the exact panels vary from patient to patient.
- Metabolomix+ with Essential & Metabolic Fatty Acids add-on (Genova Diagnostics) — organic acids, amino acids, oxidative stress and nutrient markers, plus an omega-3 and fatty acid profile
- Methylation Panel (Genova Diagnostics) — markers of methylation such as SAM, SAH, homocysteine, folate and B12
- Organic acids testing from other specialty labs when it better fits your case
Brand names link to each lab’s own sample report (PDF), so you can see what a results report looks like. Your actual panel may differ, because I choose tests for each patient individually.
How I Use These Results
These tests are most useful alongside your symptoms and other labs. A single result is a snapshot, not a diagnosis. I use the pattern to decide where to focus first, then retest when it helps track progress.
What to Expect
Most of these tests use a first-morning urine sample and/or a finger-prick blood spot collected at home. Some foods and supplements may need to be paused beforehand. Your kit instructions and our team will tell you exactly what to do.
Ready to Find Out What Your Body Needs?
Testing is most useful when it is chosen for your specific symptoms and history. I see patients in person in Norwalk, CT, serving Fairfield County and the NYC metro area, and by telehealth for Connecticut residents.
